The origin of the Christmas holiday

The history of Christmas begins in ancient Rome. Back then, the main pagan god was Saturn. Every December, people would celebrate his birthday on December 25th. This tradition carried over into the first millennium after Christ's birth when early Christians chose that date to honour Him as well. Thus, Saturnalia became one of the first ever Christmas holidays.

Ancient Romans celebrated Saturnalia for seven days beginning on December 17th by exchanging gifts with their friends and having a large feast. They decorated their homes with greenery and lights, sang songs, and threw dice to determine the order of who would be served by whom during the feast. People also burned candles, which signified their hope of God's mercy. Although Saturnalia was originally only one day long, it eventually became a week-long celebration.

The name Christmas comes from Christian leader Pope Gregory III in A.D. 731 when he established an annual holiday on December 25th to replace pagan festivities . Gregory III named the holiday "Christ's Mass" (or "Christ's Birthday") to commemorate Jesus' birth . This is why early English speakers referred to this holy time as Christes Maesse - or "Christ's Mass."
